The past two days we've heard HUGE BOOMS. The UN has contracted de-mining groups to travel throughout Southern Sudan detonating bombs and mines. Two ex-pat de-miners found us this week, hungry for connection with people of a similar culture as themselves. They were telling us about how some places have piles of bombs that villagers had uncovered waiting for them to come and detonate. I believe they also do sweeps of areas to find mines still hidden. They travel with an ambulance and medical specialists in case of an accident.
Education is also a key component. School children are taught what explosives look like. They are encouraged not to not touch them but to alert authorities if they find anything suspicious.
(In case you are wondering, Mundri town had been throughly swept before we arrived, we are not in danger of treading on anything)
De-mining is risky business. I applaud the dangerous, lonely work they do, making this a safer place to live.
