
With over a week left before the elections, Yasir Arman, a southerner, dropped out of the Presidential race. He said it was because the elections have been rigged to favor the current President, Al-Bashir, and because there was still too much conflict in Darfur to hold an election there.
This week, many opposition parties have threatened to completely boycott the election because they say the elections will not be fair. Human rights groups say, the ruling party "has intimidated and tortured opponents, skewed the census in the ruling party’s favor, manipulated the media to essentially neuter any viable opposition and used state money to bribe local chiefs".
