Helpers (7 February 2009)

 

We’ve been blessed with helpers this week!  A skilled carpenter, Clement, joins us from an hour bike ride from his home.  He has built a little workbench attached to the shea nut tree in our yard.  Clement will put ceilings in the thatch tukuls on our compound. Though they are nice and cool, grasses have the potential for bugs as well as dustings from their nibbling.    Currently, our latrine is one room with two holes.  It works well for me and the girls when go together in the dark.  Clement will turn it into a team-friendly, two-door, two-room establishment.  (It still won’t change the unnerving sound of your neighbor’s use echoing up your drop hole.)

 

Two truckload of dry bamboo have been dumped into our yard.  Three guys will split them and then put them vertically around our yard as a fence next week.  This will add a little privacy in our otherwise fishbowl life.

 

Monday, we hope a woman will come to help us around the house.  I have enjoyed the freedom and independence of taking care of ourselves, washing our own clothes by hand, carrying water from our tank to the kitchen and washroom, etc.  But I am happy to have someone to share some of that burden so that I can finish homeschooling in a timely manner each day and have energy to focus on a team.
