Last week, Michael was able to quickly arrange a group of people to come and slash the airstrip. They do this by hand with slashers: long, flat, metal tools. He also hired a man with a chainsaw to chop trees that had grown up around the edges.
There are interesting termite mounds. They are only about a foot high and shaped like mushrooms. They looks soft, but are like rocks, we all were standing on them. (I'll add some photos) People like to crush them and turn them into a mud to smear on the outside of their huts. Michael just had to go along and crush them to smooth the field.
So the airstrip was good enough for MAF to fly in and get us. Now I, Karen, am in Bundibugyo, enjoying the familiarity of this place and conversations with people who know me. Michael will arrive with our visitors tonight.
